GuerrillaScholar Home

This web site is for the promotion and support of independent scholars, amateur scientists, artists, and all those who enjoy the life of the mind but can't, won't, or ought not to do so within the confines of academia.

Guerrilla Scholar.com is dedicated to the proposition that to acquire knowledge, no matter how obscure, is an essential human activity, and that using our insight to improve the world is the highest expression of the human spirit.

News and Opinion

In a world where news is entertainment at best and propaganda at worst, I select my news sources very carefully. The links here are useful, most of them supply consistenly good information, and keep my far, far better informed than those poor saps who still think that cable television "news" actually is.

Cutting Through the Propaganda

NewsTrust. A non-partisan site for identifying good journalism. A wonderful resource for finding reliable news outlets.

Fact Check.org, a non-partisan site mostly for sniffing out political BS.

The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press.

News Sources I Like

McClatchly Washington Bureau. Solid reporting.

American Politics Journal. Good political reporting.

Capitol Hill Blue. The Washington scene.

Consortium News. Solid alternative news.

Raw Story Good alternative news site for "top headlines" stuff.

Christian Science Monitor. Very good on world events, particularly the Middle East.

Foreign News Sources

It is sadly now a fact of life that some of the best sources of news about America are located beyond our borders. As for world news, it's been a long, long time since the US media has ever done that very well.

Watching America. Translations of news about America from around the world, some available nowhere else in English.

NewsDictionary. English-language editions of foreign newspapers.

The Asia Times. Outstanding analysis on Asia and Middle Eastern affairs and trends.

Informed Comment by Juan Cole. Best Middle Eastern commentary out there.

The Crisis Papers. Superb political commentary.
